Stay compliant

Always stay compliant to changing regulations. Various international regulations apply to ship recycling:
  • to prevent unsafe and unsound ship recycling practices
  • to avoid dumping of hazardous waste in developing countries
  • to ensure management of hazardous waste in an environmentally sound manner

You may not be completely familiar with the various regulations. That is where Sea2Cradle comes in. We will help you to avoid legal problems and prevent unnecessary delays in your recycling project.

Key regulations governing ship recycling are:

Ship Recycling Regulations:

  • Hong Kong Convention, global, entering into force in June 2025
  • European Ship Recycling Regulation
  • Country specific recycling regulations

Waste Shipment Regulations:

  • Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal, including the Ban amendment
  • European Waste Shipment Regulation

The importance of adhering to the regulations

The regulations and the importance of these regulations is outlined above, the importance of staying compliant is self-evident. Which regulations apply depends on the flag and location of the ship. Regulations may impact you by restricting the choice of potential recycling destinations and facilities. They may also require additional preparation time and effort e.g. to obtain approval for moving an end-of-life vessel to its final destination.

We will take care of your complete ship recycling project and make sure the whole process complies with the regulations and that the waste involved is properly disposed of. Without unpleasant surprises or unnecessary delays in your recycling project.

How Sea2Cradle can help you

We have a deep knowledge and understanding of the rules and regulations, and can efficiently check and validate their interpretation and application. In addition, we have extensive experience from previous cases. Good contacts with authorities in key jurisdictions will ensure a smooth process.

We have assisted many clients with waste shipment notifications under the Basel Convention and EU WSR, obtaining approval from export, import and transit states for the export of an end-of-life vessel to the recycling destination. Competent authorities involved are often not experienced in applying the regulation to end-of-life ships. Interpretation of the rules may differ from state to state. Thanks to our knowledge, experience and track record, we have always been able to find solutions that lead to approval from all authorities involved.

Ensure that you are always compliant to regulations

Sea2Cradle stays ahead of regulatory changes and ensures its practices remain up-to-date, through a strong network, links to authorities worldwide, and through regular research.

We take specific steps to manage hazardous materials during the recycling process. We:- compile and verify the IHM- arrange waste shipment notifications- track all hazardous waste streams- monitor sound management and disposal of all hazardous waste- audit down-stream waste facilities. For more information, you can see IHM and Waste Management.

Sea2Cradle makes sure all recycling projects meet the highest standards of health, safety and environmental performance, striving for zero pollution, zero incidents and zero accidents. As a minimum, our projects comply with all applicable laws. Where this is not enough to meet our high standards, we go beyond compliance.
